A special case of paralogy resulting from polyploidy. Homeolog should not be confused with homolog. Homeologous chromosomes are created through chromosome duplication events, specifically with meiosis I and polyploidy. Homeologous is often used in plant comparative genomics due to rampant and repeated paleo-polyploidy events that have been detected in all sequenced angiosperm genomes to date.
