The term Syntelog is a fusion of "homolog" and "synteny" and references to a special case of orthologs and/or paralogs where genes are derived from the same ancestral genomic region. Genomic regions that are related through common ancestry are known as being syntenic.

Special thanks to Damon Lisch for coining this term.
