This document describes the consensus decisions made by a meeting organized by the Wellcome Trust held on 14-15 January 2003 at Fort Lauderdale to make policy recommendations on publishing derivative works surrounding the sequencing of the human. The basic premise is that the original champions of a genome project should have first rights on publishing results from analyzing said genome. However, these data should be made available to the research community at large so that science may advance as quickly as possible. These policies are generally accepted for all publicly funded whole genome projects.
