Gene

A region of the genome that used as a functional unit of an organism. The exact definition of a gene is open to debate and interpretation by the user. It always includes a portion of the genome that is transcribed into RNA, but may also include neighboring sequences that are involved with the regulation of transcription. An expanded view of a gene that includes cis regulator units is also called a genespace.
